Here's a brief outline of my copywriting experience over the years.

Copywriter comment: An award-winning pack produced for Yorkshire Electricity to remind its staff of the reasons why YE is better than the competition.

1992-present. Freelance Direct Marketing Copywriter working on a wide variety of brands across a universal range of industries.

My clients range from small and medium enterprises through to household names like Portakabin and Northumbria University. Some of my clients have been with me for over 16 years.

As well as working direct with businesses, I have also provided freelance copywriting services for a number of top Yorkshire direct marketing and advertising agencies - for example Judith Donovans, RP&F, Propaganda and The Producers.

Freelancing for these agencies has enabled me to work on a wide range of accounts from insurance (Pearl, Direct Line and Royal Liver) and consumer (Royal Mint, Hawkshead, Tesco Direct, Halfords, Empire Stores, Damart, Onken and Tradex) to travel (Thomson and JMC), business to business (Parcelforce), charities (Mencap and PDSA) and various VISA affinity cards.

1991-1992. Senior Copywriter, Charles Walls Advertising, Leeds.

Here I produced response-driven copywriting for everything from Maxfli golfing products through to furniture, Masonite Doors, Coalite, various industrial products and industrial chemicals.

1990-1991. Senior Direct Marketing Copywriter, Poulter plc, Leeds.

I produced copywriting for a vast range of accounts from cars (Lada), public utilities (Yorkshire Electricity) and children's sweets (Trebor Bassett) through to electronics (Sharp), industrial products (Yorkshire Fittings), breweries (Bass and Stones), breakdown cover (Green Flag) and finance (various banks including Northern Rock).

It was whilst working here that - in partnership with David Oddy, my designer - I won a number of copywriting awards.

1989-1991. Junior Copywriter, BRAHM, Leeds.

Again, a wide variety of accounts from cars (Porsche and Yugo), knitting yarn (Wendy Wools), public utilities (British Gas and British Telecom) and food products (Rank Hovis MacDougall) through to finance (various banks) and breweries (Tetleys).

This really was a case of being thrown in at the deep end as a Junior Copywriter. But within days I was working on exciting projects like video scripts for British Telecom, double-page advertisements for Wendy Wools and direct mail packs for British Telecom, British Gas and Yugo Cars.

1987-1989. PA to Director/Part-time Copywriter, Clarendon Advertising, Leeds.

Here I was lucky enough to work for an excellent advertising agency that encouraged me to build a small copywriting portfolio. This enabled me to land my first job as a fully-fledged copywriter at BRAHM (see above).

1985-1987. PA to Company Secretary. Collett, Dickenson, Pearce & Partners Ltd (Advertising), London.

My first insight into the world of advertising in one of the Top Five advertising agencies in the UK. Here I worked alongside the creative teams and copywriters responsible for memorable TV commercials like the Hamlet Cigars ads, etc.

Working as a senior PA in the mid 1980's at CDP, one of the UK's Top Five advertising agencies, provided an excellent springboard for my 19-year copywriting career.

It enabled me to get a real 'feel' for the world of advertising during one of the industry's most exciting, memorable and creative periods.

Copywriter comment: A page from a star-shaped mailing for Spicers Stationery promoting high-quality envelopes with a strong, secure self-seal flap. To endorse this message we used a tough bouncer-like man to demonstrate the product's sheer strength with appropriately aggressive copywriting.

At CDP, I worked alongside some of the most brilliant creative teams and copywriters ever - the people responsible for the famous Hamlet Cigars ads plus many more of the ads that regularly appear on those '100 Best Ads' programmes on TV.

Working in such a highly-charged creative atmosphere definitely rubbed off on me and inspired me to develop my own copywriting skills.
